Mar. 24 2024 Miscellaneous By Main Channel Marina

We made it to spring! With another winter left in our wake, it’s time to start preparing your boat for another season spent on the water. But, before you set sail, it’s crucial to make sur eyour boat is in top condition for the season ahead.

From de-winterizing, to cleaning, and replacing your safety gear, there’s a lot of preparation needed so you don’t waste those precious summer days. Here are three essential steps to get your boat ready for spring…

De-Winterizing Your Boat

After months spent in hibernation, your boat needs some TLC to shake the dust off a winter in storage (literally). Whether you choose professional service to de-winterize your boat or you DIY, here are the basics of getting your boat ready to set sail…

Engine Inspection:

  • Check fluid levels, including oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluids.
  • Inspect belts, hoses, and connections for wear and tear.
  • Ensure the battery is fully charged and terminals are clean.
  • Run the engine on land using fresh water to flush out any antifreeze.

Plumbing and Systems:

  • Inspect all plumbing lines and fittings for leaks or damage.
  • Check the bilge pump and make sure it's functioning properly.
  • Test the freshwater and waste systems for leaks and proper operation.
  • Check that navigation lights and sound signals are working correctly.

Exterior and Hull:

  • Inspect the hull for any signs of damage, cracks, or blistering.
  • Clean and wax the exterior to protect the finish from UV damage.
  • Check propellers, shafts, and rudders for damage and corrosion.
  • Inspect the trailer (if applicable) for worn tires, rust, and proper functionality.

Be sure to consult your owner’s manual before de-winterizing for spring. Your owner’s manual may have specific manufacturer recommendations and guides for this process. These suggestions may also change depending on what type of boat you have. For more details about de-winterizing, read on here.

2. Check Your Safety Gear

Safety should always be a top priority-especially on the water-and that means ensuring your safety gear and accessories are up to date and in good condition. Here are some items to check and replace if necessary…

Life Jackets and Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs):

  • Inspect all PFDs for signs of wear, tears, or mildew.
  • Replace any PFDs that are damaged or outdated.
  • Make sure you have enough PFDs for every passenger on board.

Fire Extinguishers:

  • Check the pressure gauge to ensure the fire extinguisher is fully charged.
  • Inspect the extinguisher for any signs of damage or corrosion.
  • Replace any extinguishers that are expired or damaged beyond repair.

Emergency Signaling Devices:

  • Test the horn, whistle, and other sound signaling devices.
  • Check flares and replace any expired ones.
  • Ensure you have a working marine VHF radio or other means of communication.

3. Planning Your First Outing

After completing all necessary maintenance and safety checks, it's time to plan your long-awaited first outing of the season. Make the most of your maiden voyage with these tips:

Make A Float Plan:

  • Before setting out, inform a friend or family member of your boating plans, including your intended route and expected return time.
  • Provide them with your contact information and instructions on what to do in case of an emergency.

Pack Essential Supplies:

  • Bring along plenty of food, water, sunscreen, and other essentials for a day on the water.
  • Don't forget to pack a first aid kit, tools for minor repairs, and any additional safety gear specific to your destination.

Take Notes:

  • Take note of any issues you encounter so you can tackle them quick and enjoy a worry-free season on the lake.
